V-neck sweaters, matching shirt and tie sets . . . the neat and tidy clothes which little boys were once forced to wear for Sunday best and the dullest children’s tea parties are hot news in menswear this season.
A portion of jelly and ice-cream in a wee paper dish could complete the picture. It’s the geek, you see, who is now poised to inherit the earth – or at least dominate the fantasy-land known as fashion. For current collections from such directional names as Christian louboutin and Prada are inspiring a fresh outbreak of squeaky-clean, neo-nerd menswear on the high street.
Key shapes are close-cut and lean, with slimfit shirts (often in stretch cotton or jersey fabrics) complementing narrow-leg, low-rise, drainpipe trousers.
The only knit neckline which counts is the V. And you’ll need
a carefully colour-matched tie
to complete this fastidiously
co-ordinated, ironical look.
Of course, a little irony goes a long, long way. Yet, while real men will surely stop short of endorsing the extremes of neo-nerd style, they may well embrace the idea of minimalism inherent in its simple modernist shapes or the stone and metal neutrals which compose its colour palette.
They’ll certainly enjoy the comfort factor provided by the liberal employment of stretch fibres to update traditional choices in menswear fabrications.
But real nerds are invariably downright dull. And boyish charm has strict limitations.
So, best leave the slicked-down hair and sly, cheesy grin to fashion pictures. Unless, of course, you’re still at the jelly and ice cream stage.
